Myrtos

My first visit to Myrtos was in September 1973. My last so far was in February-March 1980 but I plan to go there in September 2003.

In 1977 I was manager of Yannis' Pension for some months. I have been in contact with one other former manager of Yannis', Jim Little, who also visited Myrtos when I was there that autumn. He suggested that we should make club or something for former managers of Yannis - and maybe we should include those who have been managers at Yannis' other pension in Ierapetra. In fact, I would welcome all those who have stayed at Yannis' - at least in the 1970ies and early 1980ies. I would also be very grateful for photos from Yannis' - and from Myrtos from the period 1973-1980. Please contact me at espen@espenore.tk.

In 1973 we arrived by train from Italy. After a couple of days in Athens we went to Pireus and got on a ship (the Minos - obviously it had been used by a Swedish line many years before) to Heraklion. There in the harbour we met somebody who suggested we should take the bus(es) to Iarepetra. We had to change buses in Agias Nikolaos, then got to Ierapetra and again met someone - this one suggested that we should go to Myrtos. We did and stayed on the beach west of the village for ten days. My friend Morten from Norway and our newly met Swiss friend Peter from Basel made some kind of camp which was fine until the rain started. For our last night in Myrtos on that trip we slept in the not-yet-ready upstairs rooms at what is now Mirtos Hotel. At that time there was a small restaurant down at the corner with a kitchen stove placed in the center of the room. But the kind owner let us sleep for free during that rainy night.
